“AI” covers a lot of different tools. Some write, some search, some create images and some quietly work in the background of software you already use. Here are the main types you are likely to meet.
1. Chat assistants
Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot that you talk to in plain English. They answer questions, write and edit text, summarise documents, help with planning and explain things. Most can now also read files, look at images and search the web.
2. AI search
Search tools that give a written answer instead of a list of links, such as Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT search. They read websites, listings and reviews, then summarise what they find. This is where customers increasingly ask for recommendations.
3. Image, video and voice tools
Generative tools that create or edit media from a description: images for social posts, product mock-ups, short videos, voice-overs and transcription. Many design and photo apps now have these built in.
4. AI agents
Agents go a step further than chat. You give them a goal and they carry out a series of steps, such as researching a topic, filling in forms, booking appointments, writing and testing code, or working through a to-do list. This is one of the fastest-moving areas in AI.
5. AI built into everyday software
AI features inside email, spreadsheets, accounting, CRM, website builders and phone systems. You may already be using these without thinking of them as “AI”.
6. Predictive and analytical AI
The older, behind-the-scenes kind of AI: fraud detection, demand forecasting, recommendation engines (“customers also bought”), spam filters and route planning. It works on numbers and patterns rather than conversation.
7. Open-weight models
Some AI models are released so anyone can download and run them, such as Meta’s Llama, Alibaba’s Qwen and DeepSeek. Businesses use them when they want more control over cost, privacy or customisation.
Narrow AI vs general AI
Everything above is narrow AI: very capable at particular kinds of tasks. Artificial general intelligence (AGI), a system that matches people across almost every kind of task, is a goal some companies are working towards, but experts disagree on when or whether it will arrive.
Which matter most for your business?
For most businesses, two types matter most: chat assistants to save time inside the business, and AI search because that is where customers now look for recommendations. If you want to know how AI search describes you, book an AI visibility check.
