You can get a quick picture of how AI tools see your business in about ten minutes. Here is a simple check you can run yourself.
Step 1: Ask about your business directly
In ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, ask:
- “What can you tell me about [your business name] in [your suburb or city]?”
- “What services does [your business name] offer?”
- “How do I contact [your business name]?”
Check the answers for wrong addresses, old phone numbers, services you don’t offer, or missing information.
Step 2: Ask the questions your customers ask
Now ask the kind of question a new customer would ask, without naming your business:
- “Who is a good [your service] in [your area]?”
- “What’s the best [your service] for [type of customer] in [your city]?”
Note whether you appear, who appears instead, and how each business is described.
Step 3: Check Google
Search for your main service and location on Google. If an AI Overview appears, see whether you are mentioned or linked.
Step 4: Write down what you find
For each tool, record:
- Whether you were mentioned.
- Whether the details were correct.
- Which competitors were recommended, and what the AI said about them.
Things to keep in mind
- Answers vary. The same question can give different answers on different days, and logged-in users may see personalised results. Run each question a few times.
- Look for patterns. One odd answer matters less than a repeated mistake.
- Mistakes have causes. Wrong answers usually trace back to unclear, outdated or inconsistent information online, which can be fixed.
